 Swine Tips to Help Reduce Heat Stress

                  ¨        Feed lactating sows early in morning and later in the evening when the day is cooler to maximize intake  

¨        Consider 3-5% added fat to provide a higher energy diet during decreased

                                        consumption periods to ensure targeted growth rates are being met

¨        Evaporation is the most effective method of cooling pigs- use a combination of  wetting  pigs and fans to evaporate the moisture

¨        Ensure all fans and shutters are cleaned to allow for maximum air to be

                                        moved from facilities

¨        Make sure cool water is provided- it will be more effective than warm water in cooling the pigs

¨        Drip water on neck and shoulder portion of lactating sows- this is an area of high blood flow and will be the most effective at cooling sows

¨        Check ventilation equipment set points to ensure adequate air flow will be present during periods of hot weather

¨        Feeding gestating sows must be managed to eliminate over-conditioned sows during  farrowing- over weight sows typically have poorer feed intake and are at most risk for losing body condition which results in longer wean to estrus interval and poorer conception rates

¨        Remember to breed extra females to account for decreased conception rates so that breeding targets will be met
